Identity in Christ

From Birth
- Family name, race, gender, social status etc.
- Don't determine our choices or future, greatly influence them
- Identity shaped by
a) Environment
b) Choices we make

John 1:12 - 13 NIV
Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

1 John 3:1 - 3 NIV
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

- Become a Christian
- Who we are??
- Knowing VS Change

1. Who We Are In Christ

1 John 2:15
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

- No longer chase after desires of our flesh
- Seek to glorify God in all areas of our life
- Identity in Christ VS Something else
a) not be crushed by our failures and weaknesses
b) not fall into pride from worldly success
c) not despair over disappointments or tragedy
d) won’t get drawn away by the world's offers

Ephesians 1:3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,

Ephesians 1:5
he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,

Ephesians 1:7
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

Ephesians 1:12
so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

Ephesians 1:15 - 18
For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,

Ephesians 1:19 - 23
and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

2. No Longer Fear The Future

Romans 8:14 - 15
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father.”

- Don't need to fear financial collapse, losing our job, getting Ebola or Measles, or being ridiculed for our faith
- Comparing ourselves to those around us or judging the decisions that others make
- Bliblical convictions
- Personal convictions
- Gifts and blessings of others
- Have you been changed by Christ?
- Where do you find yourself seeking identity outside of Christ?
