Refining Our Pursuit With God IV

Philippians 4:6
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God”

Eph 5:20
“Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Psalm 95:2
“Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.”

Col 4:2
“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”

Palms 9:1
“I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds”

Ingratitude
- lack of thankfulness

Failing to have a sense of Gratitude is actually INGRATITUDE

I. COMPLAINING IS A SYMPTON OF INGRATITUDE
- Complaining means to express Resentment in a Negative, Unproductive manner.

Exodus 16:8
Moses also said, “You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.”

Our complaints are against God and are an offense against Him. Complaining undermines our confidence in God and His purposes. It results from a lack of faith in God’s ability and intentions to love us. Complaining criticizes God’s character. It defames the very goodness of God’s nature. And because complaining is contagious, it discourages others, undermines their faith in God, and causes others to doubt God’s goodness.

James 1:2-4 (TLB)
Dear friends, is your life full of difficulties and temptations? Then be happy, for when the way is rough, your patience has a chance to grow. So let it grow, and don't try to squirm out of your problems. For when your patience is finally in full bloom, then you will be ready for anything, strong in character, full and complete.

Hebrews 3:7-11
So, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert, where your fathers tested and tried me and for forty years saw what I did. That is why I was angry with that generation, and I said, 'Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.' So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.' "

Complaining, Murmuring, Grumbling Against God

Numbers 14:26-30
Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "How long will this wicked nation complain about me? I have heard everything the Israelites have been saying. Now tell them this: `As surely as I live, I will do to you the very things I heard you say. I, the LORD, have spoken! You will all die here in this wilderness! Because you complained against me, none of you who are twenty years old or older and were counted in the census will enter the land I swore to give you. The only exceptions will be Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

1 Cor 15:33
Do not be misled:
"Bad company corrupts good character”

II. COMPLAINING IS REMEDIED BY GRATITUDE

Philippians 2:5
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 2:23
Peter said of Jesus, When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.

1 Thessalonians 5:18
“Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”

1. Am I a thankful person?
2. Am I choosing thankfulness over complaining moment by moment?

1 Corinthians 1:4
“ALWAYS I thank my God...”
